An atherectomy is performed to remove dangerous accumulations of plaque from within the walls of an artery, one of several methods available at Temple for treating atherosclerosis. The location and extent of the plaque build-up, as well as the patient’s condition, factor into the decision about whether this procedure may be helpful. Atherectomy is a minimally invasive procedure in which the interventionist uses a catheter tipped with a small, rotating blade to cut or grind away the plaque.
